Port Revitalisation
Building a complete neighbourhood  |  MQA Architecture  |  2018

Mundra is the largest privately-owned  port in India, with over 100 million metric tonnes of cargo handled each year. The port town was an underdeveloped residential area. The vision was to transform it into a  

dynamic mixed-use urban village with new cultural and recreational activities,  using a people first approach.

The key objective was to instil a sense of belonging for the working residents through an integrated masterplan framework. To make public life the forefront of urban design decisions relating to streets, plazas and educational and civic institutions as well as larger environmental decisions to create green buffer zones around the township.

I was involved in devising a strategic phasing model with detailed design interventions of each phase of the masterplan. Additionally, the masterplan was sequenced to first establish a relationship between the people, the waterfront and the facilities. The town’s heart would be a school and market plaza connecting to the waterfront and with a green corridors with a network of trails to the residences. Thereafter, designing a larger public realm recreational facilities and large public parks, creating a new identity for the port town. I was leading a team for the public realm approach for the masterplan through urban design, advisory services and client representation.
