Iridescence
Live size installation at the Kala Ghoda Art Festival, Mumbai. | 2014
Iridescence was selected out of over 120 design proposals to be displayed at India’s most prestigious 7 day art festival. Inspired by the city I live in, Mumbai, an abstract approach was taken to the word ‘momentum’. The intensity and the speed further translated into life of an individual in Mumbai A whirlwind of activities, people, noise and motion all at once. An assault on the senses, so much so that we tend miss out on the nuances of each and every frame that the city has to offers. At this pace where things are only viewed at rapid speeds, defined images begin to blur into colours.
The design, therefore attempts to put together these pieces of one's life in Mumbai into a puzzle, to allow each person to interact with the installation to create their version of the city they experience. The tiles contain small glimpses of the life of the city and one who relates themselves to those nuances can put their life's puzzle together.
The design includes over 500 macro photographs taken across Mumbai, as tiles to form a puzzle within each panel to encourage user interaction with the canopy. Each panel is made up of 25 triple layered units designed such that they can be shifted around within the panel.
